Variance Calculator

I thought it would be interesting to do an updated variance calculation on my win rate. It's been about 2yrs or so since I last did one.

This one the I used is from a site called pokerolymp. It is for cash game poker specifically and calculates the expected value, standard deviation and risk of ruin over a given time frame.

Here are my results:

I used a win rate of 2.5 which is about right for me. The Standard Deviation defaults to 65 for Full Ring.
You can see that I am expected to win 125 stacks over the course of 500,000 hands with a SD of 45 stacks.

The Graph looks like this:

There can be quite a big difference between the upper and lower standard deviation.

Will I go busto?:

To be safe I should keep around 50 BIs at which ever stake I'm playing.

The Perfect Note

A pretty interesting hand came up here. A reg limps and a whale isolates and I pick up the rockets. Normally I would just pump this up as the whale has 0% fold to 3b. However, just before I slam down the raise I notice a note on the reg:

This changes everything as with my blockers to AA or AK he pretty much has KK. Im not sure if his limp re-raise range has JJ/QQ or AQ or anything else but as its not in my notes so I can heavily weight this towards KK.

$6K Hit, NL200 Activated

I just hit the next level up on my 30 BI BRM system. I can now add NL200 tables. I will try out some of these during the next few days.

I have been playing all levels up to and including NL100 last few days which has got me over the $6k mark.

I also attempted a random crazy grind day where I tried to play 20k hands and beat my previous record of 18k.

It was a sad fail as I burnt out and gave up:

Nice to be moving generally in the right direction..!!

Chris Moneymaker Effect on WSOP Main Event Entrant Numbers

2003 was a year in poker history that many will never forget. It was the beginning of the blow up boom that happened after Chris Moneymaker won the WSOP Main Event after qualifying through a satellite.

If you look at the number of entrants in the year that followed his win you can see that it tripled:

The numbers then steadily rose and peaked in 2006 when Jamie Gold won $12m for 1st.

Since then they have fluctuated but in the last 4 years they have declined year on year. It is possible that in 2010 there was just a random peak as from 2007 to 2013 generally there is not much difference. Next year will be an interesting stat and will show us if the WSOP ME is really in decline, especially if numbers dip below 6k.

It Only Took 77 Years But He Did It

Andy Murray has just won his first Wimbledon title and his second Grand Slam title.

It's been 77 years since we have had a male British Champion at Wimbledon and it feels good. The last winner was Fred Perry.

I have been to the Wimbledon final before but that was a few year back and I only got to see Nadal and Berdych :). I would have loved to have seen this one live but its all good.

Murray won incredibly in straight sets beating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 but it was an exciting match with numerous breaks of serve but both players.

The last game was really nail biting as Andy had 3 match points only to lose them all as Novak came back to deuce. However he got another match point and converted for the win.

Murray said afterwards "I understand how much everyone wanted to see British winner at Wimbledon and I hope everyone enjoyed it."

Well Done Andy..!!

GG
